This parcel is from Alan Dean’s vineyard in Piccadilly. The Commune has been taking small parcels from this vineyard since 2016 which are usually blended into the Basketown Red. The vineyard sits at the southern entrance to the valley at 450m elevation, on the eastern slopes of Mount Lofty. The vineyard year on year has shown excellent natural acidity and with a unique, red-fruited flavour profile. It’s a high altitude site, one of the coolest in the valley offering incredible tannin development for its relatively lower alcohols and we feel after working with the grapes for this time it deserves to become its own single-vineyard wine.

The Eurilla 2021 was harvested in late march with the fruit chilled overnight and then destemmed into a single 3000L fibreglass fermenter with 10% whole bunches on top. The fermentation had some gentle remontage, and a single pigage at the end of fermentation to fix colour and extract tannin. The wine was aged in 10-year-old barriques for 6 months on fine lees then racked to fibreglass for a further 3 months to settle.

The wine is pretty, light and full of energy but has good acidity and tannin structure that carries its red fruits. – Commune of Buttons
