We’re incredibly lucky to work with one of the most prestigious vineyards of Nebbiolo in this country, with some of Australia’s most revered examples coming from the place we call home – Gumeracha in the Adelaide Hills. We hand pick the fruit as a team – generally the signal of the end of vintage – head back to the winery, have lunch, and process the fruit in the afternoon. It’s a wine that we’ve always had a great fondness for.
You know what we are also fond of? PASTA. We’re die-hard pastafarians and love a great Neb with our bowl of noodles. So, we craft this wine in an approachable and jovial style built for the new world, with a nod to old world, old school Nebbiolo – perfect with your next Sugo. Aromatically it’s a twist on the classic “tar and roses” adage, think more violets and pencil shavings with a whiff of cardamom. But this is far more red fruited and juicy than your average, with ripples of balsamic strawberries and chinotto over the top of a pitch perfect balance of acid to tannin. It’s not a Nebbiolo that’s going to rip your face off, but it certainly doesn’t pull any flavour punches. In short it’s a Unico Zelo take on Nebbiolo – it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
