Founded in 2010, Heaps Good Wine Company is a small family owned winery situated in Ritoznoj in the foothills of the Pohorje range in Stajerska Slovenija. New Zealand expat Nick Gee worked all over the world making wines and gaining experience – having completed 25 harvests in his time, across 4 different countries, and with over 20 different grape varieties – before settling in Stajerska.
Nick works with both international and local varieties, using minimal intervention and adds as to produce wines that express the individuality of their vineyard sites. The cool climate of Stajerska allows Nick to make wines of balance, purity, restraint and elegance.
The non vintage red is multi-vintage, multi-varietal mash up. A wild blend of Pinot Noir, Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Wurzer (fermented on skins), Syrah, Yellow Muscat, all from the Pohorje Foothills, Lower Styria. Zweigelt and Yellow Muscat are co-fermented, with all other varieties made separately. Wines are aged 12 months in older French oak and then in concrete.
Light and juicy red but with plenty of flavour richness and complexity from all the different varietals coming through. Ruby in colour, spicy red fruits, white pepper, a touch of oak, plums and cassis. Velvety tannins and a tart finish (perhaps the white grapes coming through).
