Moravia is a historical region in central Europe that served as the centre of the kingdom of Bohemia in the 11th century. In the 20th century it became part of the modern state of Czechoslovakia and subsequently of the Czech Republic.
The Nestarec’s are in the village of Velke Bilovice, located in the southern part of Moravia, 15km north of the Austrian border. A region rich in agriculture, Moravia is noted for its viticulture. With 94% of the Czech Republic’s vineyards here it is the centre of the countries wine region.
Since 2009 the vineyards have been worked in organic farming, and some biodynamic practices are used, but Milan is not dogmatic here. His focus is on a healthy eco system and understanding the needs of each individual site.
This vintage is amazing, especially considering the conditions the grapes went through. Saved in part by the range of hand picking and blending from vines that are 6 – 21 years old.
2022 was very dry and hot, with only 421 mm of rainfall (= about 100 mm less than average) and 32+ days with temperatures exceeding 30 °C between June and August. While the younger vineyards visibly suffered, the older vineyards coped very well. The temperatures dropped radically at the end of August and the ripening became very slow, thanks also to the nearly constant September rain. Fortunately, warmer weather returned in October and saved the vintage.
“Nach” is purple in Czech, and is named as a strong nod to Milan Nestarecs favourite grape, Blaufrankisch, which makes up the bulk of this wine. Sorted by hand, destemmed, uncrushed with a gentle push by the pneumatic press and collection only of free-run juice. It then undergoes spontaneous fermentation for 14 days in open-top vats with regular gentle remontage. Aged in a combination of stainless steel and wood tanks for ~ 6 months.
A light and elegant red blend with plenty of blackberry, purple and blue fruits on the nose, with cherry, cassis and some hay-like tannins. Finishes slightly try and bitter. Delicious when served with a slight chill.
