Grapes grown on Robert Surmann’s vineyard located in Totness with 25 y/o sauvignon blanc grown on Black Sandy soil overlying petrified schist, it is V.S.P. Trained and spur pruned. Whole branched of sauvignon blanc bunches are placed in a 2400L wooden fermenter and the topped with free-run juice until the fermenters full. The fermenter is sealed and the wine undergoes carbonic ferment and is aged for 4 months on the macerated whole bunches. The wine is pressed in winter and assembled. The wine is slightly cloudy, golden coloured with a kaleidoscope of orange hues. It’s aromas of citrus peel and marigolds lift above the myrrh of snappiness. There is a tension in this wine from the pull of savoury tannins and the sweet perfume of kumquats. Orange wine has existed forever and will never die because it is sublime. – Lucy M
