Chateauneuf Du Pape is an iconic and historical appellation of France, based in the Rhone Valley these wines were originally made for the Pope which explains the name of the appellation. The regions is known for spectacular wines with power, and complexity. With lots of old vines of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, seeing maturation in oak barrels.

The 2019 Clos du Roi was vinified primarily in concrete with a small proportion of whole-bunch fermentation, there’s a lifted, airy freshness to Gigognan’s Clos du Roi that’s consistent from vintage to vintage. A full-bodied blend of Grenache, Mourvédre and Syrah, it’s packed with layers of succulent blackberry, cherry and plum, lifted by a stony, salty minerality. Fine, smoothing tannins are already evident even while this wine is young but it would also be great for cellaring for well into a decade.
