This Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer field blend is from the Merkel Vineyard that straddles the ridge (~550m above sea level) running up to Mount Bellevue on a forgotten outpost of Whitlands, scythed off by the erosive action of the mighty Boggy Creek that runs between them. A glorious spot featuring panoramic views of the valleys surrounding it, it is quite the breathtaking vantage point, and a lovely spot to grow grapes.
After a few years trialling different percentages, 2025 sees a return to the original composition of 85% Riesling, 10% Pinot Gris and 5% Gewurztraminer. A perfect vintage really allowed the Riesling to shine without the risk of overpowering acidity and also allowing for a completely dry styled field blend. Without a doubt our favourite rendition of this wine, so pure, fresh and aromatic. Myer lemon, lemon myrtle, white flowers and apricot marry perfectly to the crisp yet well weighted palate. Acid drive is strong here, but focussed and balanced. Life affirming stuff, with more energy giving qualities than eating Guarana straight from the tree. – Konpira Maru
