Vasco Cetti, his wife Graziella Cappelli and their son David own and manage the beautiful 50 hectare farm of Poderi del Paradiso located just outside the beautiful town of San Gimignano. While Vasco only turned his hand to viticulture in the 1970’s, this former surgeon’s family have owned these vineyards since the Middle Ages. 30 hectares are under vine and are managed by consultant enologist Paolo Caciorgna. The densely planted vineyards are on steep south east facing slopes and are planted on mainly Pliocnecic soils ( which contain shell fossils) and Albarese stones. The elevation is high at between 300 – 400 metres which ensures a long gentle ripening period. Whilst Vasco is keen to preserve the region’s viticultural heritage with Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Sangiovese, he equally believes in experimenting with the terroir having planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and some Syrah. Saxa Calida is an IGT Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot and Cabernet, expressing with great finesse the potential of these varieties in making a true Super Tuscan.
