Fifth-generation winemakers Daniel and Jonas Brand took over the family winery from their father Jürgen in 2014 – with his support they expanded from 12 to 18ha and transitioned production to fully organic and natural. That year, Jonas produced his first sulphur free, natural wine, from an old-vine Sylvaner vineyard; 2/3 was undrinkable! Undaunted, the brothers pushed on, continuing their natural winemaking journey. They now have the whole estate running under organic cultivation and are producing some seriously incredible additive free natural wines. We were lucky enough to become friends with Jonas when he visited Australia in 2018/19 and he even filled in for a few shifts in the bar with us!
The 2018 Vom Berg Riesling is a stunning showcase of classic, dry German Riesling with the added soul of organic farming and minimal intervention winemaking. Intense aromas of green apple, lemon blossom, honey and limestone minerality. The crisp green apple flows through to the palate with driving acidity and additional notes of ruby grapefruit and lemon zest coming through. An incredibly pure and precise wine!
