Zweigelt is an Austrian native varietal that’s been having a resurgence recently, and just south of the Austrian border in northern Slovenia they’re taking notice and making some fun wines of their own using the little known grape.

Janko Bogatic is ‘Gabernik 23’, his acres of vines are situated in Ritoznoj, at around 500m altitude, in the foothills of the Pohorje ranges. The area is characterised by marl soils, warm summer days and cold, snowy winters, which raise wines of good concentration and flavour. Janko is all about wild fermentation and he only uses oak to rest one of his wines.

New into Australia, and just landed at Mr West it’s super fresh tasting wine that the team are loving at the moment. This aromatic Zweigelt is full of red/purple fruit liveliness we’ve come to expect from the variety, helped along by a tangy acid lift and smooth, velvet texture.
