Foursquare of Barbados is a powerhouse of rum distilling. Independently owned by the Seale family, Richard Seale is highly regarded as one of the best rum producers and blenders of his generation. On top of which he is widely praised for the distillery’s transparency and dedication to craft, certainly raising the bar of what is regarded as ‘exceptional rum’.
Having just landed in the country the Foursquare ‘Exceptional Cask’ series has been widely anticipated among rum enthusiasts. We were so excited to get our hands on the Touchstone, Covenant and 2011.
The Covenant holds the distilleries oldest year statement to date, with this rum seeing 18 years of maturation fully in the tropics. Matured exclusively in ex-bourbon cask American white oak, this long-aged bottling was formed from a blend of Rums distilled in 2004 and 2005. An initial spell of ten years in cask led to it being vatted, and then after a considered reduction in alcoholic strength, it was re-casked for a further eight years before being bottled.
