Vincent and Tania Carême fell into their winemaking destiny when they inherited a 5-hectare vineyard from Vincent’s parents in prime Vouvray territory. Since then they have purchased a few more sites and now far approximately 15 hectares. Their cellar is carved into the Tuffeau Cliffs just near the village of Vernou. Among the barrels is a collection of amazing sculptures crafted by local artists making it a truly unique place.
Due to the location, Vincent and Tania predominantly grow Chenin Blac but also a small handful of other varieties, most of which go into this wine. All grapes were handpicked, with the most prevalent grape used in ‘Fizzy Pink’ is Côt, the local name for Malbec, which contrary to popular belief originated in the South West of France and not Argentina. This wine was intended to be a simple and fun Pet-Nat style sparkling wine only sold over the cellar door. However, our importers convinced Vincent and Tania to send a small amount to Australia because they loved it so much – and we’re glad they did!
As the name implies it is a deep pink wine made from Côt (the local name for Malbec), Gamay de Bouze (a teinturier grape variety that has red juice), Cabernet Franc and Grolleau Gris. It has just 6 grams of residual sugar. – Mr West
