Dry white. This charged, fuzzy-tangy textural white takes its name from a trellis system, unique to the Canary Islands and known locally as el cordon trenzado (the braided cord). This type of trellising results in a plaited cordon with a number of the vine’s branches braided together. Trenzado is a blend of old vine 90% Listán Blanco – from the high altitude, north facing vineyards of Esquilón and La Piñera – blended with 6% Pedro Ximénez (El Esquilón) and a young vine “vidueño”, or field blend, from La Florida where Gual, Marmajuelo, Baboso Blanco, Albillo Criollo, Vijariego Blanco and Verdello populate the vineyard. After harvesting the grapes by hand they are brought to the cellar and destemmed. About 40% of the cuvée is fermented in concrete tanks on skins while the remainder is pressed and fermented in second, third and fourth fill 500-litre French oak demi-muids. Both fermentations are natural and last about three weeks. The wine is aged for 8 months in concrete and barrel before bottling. 2015 gives a deep and powerful Trenzado. It’s classically reductive, with layers of baked stone fruits and smoky, struck flint notes. It floods the mouth with layers of mineral-savoury flavour yet vivid freshness and a finish that charges like the Light Brigade. Unique and delicious.
